Marine fuel is exposed to temperature swings, moisture, vibration, and extended storage periods. Without proper care, it degrades, absorbs water, and builds up deposits that clog your fuel system. If ethanol-free fuel is available at your marina, it's worth the premium. Your engine will run cleaner, your fuel will stay fresher longer, and you'll deal with far fewer fuel-system issues over the life of the engine.

That said, even ethanol-free fuel needs proper treatment and care. Fuel is still vulnerable to oxidation, moisture condensation, varnish buildup, and microbial growth — especially in boats that sit for extended periods.

Fuel Additives: What They Actually Do

"Fuel treatment" is a broad term. Different additives serve different purposes. Here's what experienced boaters use:

Fuel Stabilizers

Fuel stabilizers prevent oxidation and varnish formation in stored fuel. They keep gasoline fresh for months longer than untreated fuel. Water Dissolvers / Moisture Eliminators

Replace the element at least once a year — more often if you regularly find water in it. A clear-bowl separator lets you visually inspect for water accumulation at a glance. Many boaters keep a spare element onboard.

Signs of Fuel Trouble
